Lifeguard Training American Red Cross

Lifeguard Certification Course
Please Note:
Completion of the course includes a two-year certification in lifeguarding and adult/infant CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuers. Minimum age requirement is 15 years old.
The course is designed to be completed within a 27-hour period with a maximum of ten participants per class. Duration of completion will depend on the group of individuals and their ability to pick up on skills and perform those skills in a timely manner.
Certifications are valid for two years, if you wish to recertify, you must do so before your certification expires.

What to bring:
Towels, swimsuit, registration form, payment, pen and paper, dry clothes, and food/drinks. A fridge and microwave will be available on site. Snacks are encouraged, we spend a large amount of time doing skills in the water and will burn up a lot of energy. A one-hour lunch break will be taken along with several short breaks as needed daily.

What to expect:
All participants must pass two prerequisite swimming tests to be eligible to continue on with the course. This test will take place on the first day. The pre-requisite swimming test includes the following;
1) Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence;
Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards.
After swimming 150 yards, maintain position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading water using only your legs, hands must be under your armpits.
After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.
-While swimming, you must swim continuously, and demonstrating good breath control.
-You may use the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
- Swim goggles are allowed.
2) Beginning in the shallow end, participants will swim 20 yards, then surface dive to the bottom of the pool (7-10ft. deep) and retrieve a 10lb. rubber brick. Participants will then swim the brick back to the shallow end of the pool using only their legs to propel them. Both hands must remain on the brick at all times. This will be a timed event, and must be completed within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Participants will take the prerequisites before full payment is required. At the end of the course, participants will be tested on their water skills by performing an in-water rescue, followed by performing three minutes of CPR. If the participant hits all skill objectives, they will continue on to the written tests. There will be two tests both multiple choice one involving lifeguard scenarios and one over CPR/AED/First Aid. Participants must score a minimum of 80% on both tests to pass.

Things to know:
Make-up classes will not be allowed. Participants must be present for the entire course. Discuss any issues with the instructor. Must have a minimum of three participants signed up to hold the class. The instructor has the right to remove any participant from the course due to inadequate skill performance, behavior, cheating, not following facility/class rules, dispute with other class participants or any other unforeseen reasoning. Certifications will be delivered to the participant via email by the American Red Cross within 1-2 business days after course completion.
